Phest PHAQs
How do you create the chamber groups for individual registrants?
Groups are formed and repertoire is chosen based on your age and playing level. We use your placement video to match you up with others that we think you will enjoy working with. (We are pretty good at this, by the way; the ensembles we create frequently return as preformed groups.)
What are the requirements for a preformed group?
Preformed groups should comprise a complete ensemble (quartet, quintet, etc). You should choose your own music as well. If you and two friends want to form a quartet we will be happy to find a fourth member, but you will not be considered a preformed group.
Do I need to upload a video?
If you are registering as an individual you must submit a video unless our director, Gabe Bolkosky, has already heard you play within the last four months. If you are in a preformed group we do not need a video.
Will I get my music ahead of time?
Yes! Preformed groups should choose their own music. Phoenix-formed groups will receive their music assignments via email, in advance of the event. You should begin practicing right away and make efforts to meet with members of your group. The more you prepare in advance, the more rewarding your Phest experience will be.
Is there a dress code?
No. Each ensemble is free to decide for themselves what to wear at the final concert, whether it’s concert black or t-shirts & jeans.
I’m not sure whether I should do chamber music or the Suzuki institute at PhoenixPhest! Grande. What’s the difference?
Both events are open to anyone who wants to attend, no matter your age or playing level. Tuition is higher for the festival because:
- Chamber music students are guaranteed placement in an ensemble. While we offer chamber music as a Suzuki elective as well, we cannot guarantee that every elective request will be honored.
- Chamber music students can opt for longer daily private lessons by committing to more hours of practice; the institute does not offer that option.
Still not sure which program is best for you? Please contact us; we’ll be happy to help you figure it out.
Do you offer financial aid?
Yes, based on need only. Click here to download an application. Awards are made on a rolling basis as the applications come in, so you should apply as soon as possible. Also, please be aware that our funds are very limited. We hope you will also consider other ways of reducing your costs, such as staying with a host family instead of the hotel.
Is there anything I can do to help?
So glad you asked! Yes, we rely heavily on volunteers to help make our events run smoothly. There are a number of ways you can help with the Phests. Some possibilities include:
- hosting out of town students
- making airport runs
- assisting with faculty meals
- running errands
- helping with administrative tasks
- ushering at faculty concerts
We also have a number of year-round committees, including Phest Planning, Marketing, Fundraising, etc. Please email info@phoenixensemble.com if you are interested in helping out. Thank you so much!
