PhoenixPhest! Grande — August 13-17, 2012
PhoenixPhest! Grande is a combined chamber music festival and full-scale Suzuki institute located on the campus of Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, MI. Suzuki participants take part in traditional institute offerings including group classes, private lessons, teacher training, parent lectures and play-ins. Those participating in PhoenixPhest Grande chamber music festival have a week of intensive chamber music coaching and private lessons. In addition, there are daily student and faculty recitals, and a variety of electives available to all. Schedules are carefully tailored by the festival director to meet each student’s individual needs.
The chamber music festival
- All instruments welcome
- Chamber group coachings (form your own group in advance or we’ll create one for you)
- Daily private lessons, with length of lesson determined by your daily practice commitment (1 hour practice = 15 minute lesson; 2 hours = 30 minute lesson; 3 hours = 60 minute lesson)
- Scheduled daily practice sessions (you choose how many)
- Choice of electives: Alexander Technique with Brian Martz; Inside the Music with Tamar Bloch; Jazz improvisation with Christian Howes

- Violin, viola, cello, bass
- Large (repertoire) and small (technique) group classes
- Pre-Twinkler classes
- Private lessons in master class format
- Scheduled daily practice sessions

Every Child Can!™ with Pam Devenport (Friday, Aug. 10)
ECC is an inspiring, in-depth introduction to Dr. Suzuki’s philosophy. It is the required first course for those pursuing training in Suzuki teaching, and is also open to non-teachers, prospective teachers, parents, administrators and all others interested in learning about the Suzuki approach to education. It is not instrument-specific. Experienced Suzuki teachers are also encouraged to participate for renewed inspiration or review. The class will be held from 9am to 4pm. The fee is $115.
Mimi Zweig’s Teacher Workshop (August 13–14)
We are delighted that Mimi Zweig, professor of violin and director of the Indiana University String Academy, is offering her two-day workshop again this year! Each day will include two hours of lecture and four hours of masterclasses (phest and suzuki participants or Zweig participants), and will cover a broad range of topics, including:
- initial set-up
- fixing set-up problems using etudes, scales and repertoire
- how to teach shifting and vibrato
The workshop is open to music teachers and anyone else who would like to attend. The cost is $300 for the two days.
Housing
There is a huge national convention happening in the area during this week. Housing is extremely limited. PLEASE make your arrangements as soon as possible! We are also keeping lists of a) local families who are willing to host out of town students, and b) participants who are willing to be matched up with a roommate. Please contact us if you are interested in hosting, staying with a family, or rooming with another phester.That said… we have reserved two blocks of rooms:

Meals
The Eagle Cafe, located in the Alexander Building, will be open M–F, 11:30–1:30. Sandwiches, salads, healthy snacks and beverages will be available to purchase. Or you can bring a box lunch. There are tables inside as well as grassy lawns outside, perfect for picnics!
