PhoenixPhest! Suzuki Workshop — Sunday, May 27, 2012
This one-day workshop gives young string players a chance to witness the magic of chamber music while taking part in Suzuki group classes and activities. Classes will be taught by members of our Phest faculty and groups will perform at the student concert along with the Phest ensembles. The workshop is open to Suzuki violin, viola, cello and bass players of any age or level. Note: all children must be accompanied by an adult throughout the day.
Tuition is $60; register by February 15 and take $10 off.
Workshop schedule
9:30 a.m. — check in at Alexander Building
10:00–2:00 — group classes and activities, including a break for lunch (bring your own)
3:00 pm — final concert begins, in Alexander Recital Hall
Special Guest Clinicians Terry Durbin (violin) and Avi Friedlander (cello)
Dr. Timothy (Terry) Durbin’s unique brand of teaching excellence makes him one of the most sought-after clinicians/conductors in the country. With infectious enthusiasm and inspired musicianship, he brings smiles and laughter to students throughout the United States and around the world. His dynamic teaching career includes over 700 workshops and institutes! His performance and teaching career stretches across the United States and Canada into Bermuda, Germany, Italy, China, Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore, and he has recorded two CDs, including the complete chamber music of Marcel Dupre for the Naxos label. Terry Durbin is also an accomplished composer and notable arranger.
Dr. Durbin holds a DMA in orchestral conducting from Claremont Graduate University in Los Angeles, California, a Masters in violin performance from the University of Illinois, an undergraduate degree in violin performance from the University of Alabama, and is currently the director of the Suzuki String Program at the University of Louisville. He is a registered teacher trainer with the Suzuki Association of the Americas.
Terry lives with his wife, Sandy, on 75 acres north of Lexington, Kentucky. They have three children and two grandchildren. He believes in the magic of music’s power to enrich our lives.
Cellist Avi Friedlander currently teaches at both Emory University in Atlanta and the Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham. He received his Master’s and Bachelor’s of Music performance degrees from The University of Michigan, and pursued his professional studies degree from The Cleveland Institute of Music. A former Assistant Principal cellist of the Atlanta Opera and member of The New World Symphony, he also served as a substitute member of the Detroit Symphony and is currently a substitute member with the Alabama Symphony. Mr. Friedlander has also performed with The Columbus Symphony in Ohio, The Dayton Philharmonic and The Toledo Symphony. Mr. Friedlander is a former Adjunct Professor of Cello at both Andrews University in Michigan and Birmingham Southern College. He has been trained in Suzuki Method as a long term apprentice to Dr. Tanya Carey and in short term training with Pam Devenport and Gilda Barston. Mr. Friedlander has also been trained in Early Child Development for a Suzuki teacher with Ed Sprunger and teaching cello group classes with Carey Beth Hockett. His primary teachers have included Anthony Elliott, Stephen Geber, Tanya Carey and David Premo. He has also studied with Richard Aaron, Eric Kim, Yehuda Hanani, Hans Jensen, Mihael Mermegan, and Debra Fayroian. Mr. Friedlander has participated in such music festivals as the Pacific Music Festival in Japan, Aspen Music Festival, National Repertoire Orchestra, Meadowmount School for Strings and National Orchestra Institute. Mr. Friedlander has performed in master classes with such cellist as Janos Starker, Bernard Greenhouse, Laurence Lesser, Steven Doane and Martin Meking. Mr. Friedlander has taught at workshops and festivals around the country including the Nashville Suzuki Workshop, Cincinnati Young Artist Workshop, Cincinnati Conservatory of Music Workshop, Parker Elementary Workshop in Houston, Amarillo Suzuki Workshop, Eastern Tennessee Workshop, Birmingham Young Artist Workshop and Triada Music Festival. Mr. Friedlander teaches at the New Mexico Suzuki Institute, New Orleans Suzuki Camp, Florida Suzuki Institute and Cincinnati Young Artist Workshop during the summers. Mr. Friedlander is the founder and director of STEP Birmingham and Birmingham Young Artist Workshop and holds an active studio in both Birmingham, AL and Atlanta, GA.
PhoenixPhest! Faculty Concert
The Saturday night faculty concert is a PhoenixPhest! tradition. The concert will be held at Kerrytown Concert House beginning at 8:00 pm. Tickets are $25 for the general public, but are only $10 for workshop families. Click here to reserve your tickets.
