How to approach: a new piece, daily practice, playing fast, playing slow; how to deal with burnout and anxiety; how to prepare for a lesson; how to create practice logs & lists.
In this class we discuss skills needed to play in an orchestra. There will also be relevant repertoire covered.
Solo Bach for Violin & Cello
This class will review & discuss some of the violin sonatas & partitas and cello suites. There will be lecture and class discussion as well as in-class performance opportunities. Preparation of a solo Bach movement is suggested but not required.
Work with piano faculty on a sonata you have already prepared. Class will be masterclass style, with 2 or 3 students per hour. Please contact the director if you are interested.
This class focuses on Bartok’s 44 Duos for Two Violins. There will be lecture and class discussion as well as in-class performance opportunities. Advance preparation of duo(s) is suggested but not required.
Note Reading for Beginners
This class focuses on basic music reading skills for beginners of all ages.
Jazz Improvisation with Christian Howes
Improvisation is an important skill that often gets overlooked in traditional music education. This is a great opportunity to work with one of the finest jazz musicians around… who also happens to be a classically-trained violinist and a Suzuki dad.
Chamber Music for Suzuki Students
Students are formed into groups and work with Phest faculty. There is no minimum age or book level requirement. Chamber music skills can be taught at every level! (Note: those who choose this elective will need to provide a placement video as described on our FAQs page.)
